Short History of the IMTA
The first Military Testing Association (MTA) conference was convened in
October 1959 at the US Naval Examining Center at Great Lakes,
Illinois. The Center invited some 60
military and civilian representatives of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine
Corps, and Coast Guard to discuss areas of common interest in the field of job
proficiency evaluation. So successful
was this conference in providing exchanges of ideas and information that the
conferees established the MTA as a continuing entity. It was decided that an annual conference of the MTA membership
and guests should be hosted by each of the armed services in turn.
In
1993 the Steering Committee changed the name to the International Military
Association (IMTA) to reflect the increasing involvement of countries
around the world. Currently the Steering Committee is comprised of
representatives from Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, the
Netherlands, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In
addition, participants at recent IMTA meetings have also included
representatives from Finland, Israel, Italy, New Zealand, Poland,
Portugal, and Sweden. Annual
meetings of the IMTA have been hosted by Australia, Canada, the European
Community, and the United States.
The
IMTA has become an increasingly important forum for the exchange of ideas
among uniformed and civilian researchers and practitioners.
The annual meeting brings together representatives of many
countries to report, exchange, and discuss research results, ideas, and
techniques. Areas of interest
are much broader than the name conveys and include aptitude and job
proficiency testing, training, occupational analysis, leadership and
organizational behavior, human factors, personnel trends, and manpower
analyses. The meeting is
organized to include invited addresses, symposia, individual papers, and
time for interaction among participants.
